When the siren of ethics fades, the road of deception lies ahead.
A quiet North Carolina town’s tranquility was disrupted when a car dealership scandal erupted, revealing a tangled web of deceit. Not one, not two, but twelve current and former employees of a seemingly reputable car dealership were brought into the limelight facing a staggering total of over 400 criminal charges.
Initiated by the N.C. DMV’s License and Theft Bureau, what began as an inquiry into title rebuilding for salvage cars at the Nissan of Shelby, quickly broadened. As layers were peeled back, startling revelations included undisclosed damages to unsuspecting customers, overlooked vehicle inspections before sale, and neglected title transfers.
Merely five months before this expose, an investigation by WBTV had already unearthed Nissan of Shelby’s dubious activities. Their research revealed that the dealership had on offer totaled cars and those damaged by floods. Even more disturbing, these vehicles were previously part of insurance salvage auctions.
But the transgressions didn’t stop there. Further charges were mounted for the wrongful use of temporary tags and fabricated statements concerning the actual sale dates of cars.
Following the initial investigation, Shelby’s general manager, Sam Kazran, departed from his position. Yet, the shadow of his past trailed him. One hundred ten counts were levied against him for neglecting to inspect vehicles before listing them for sale. Dig deeper into his history, and you will discover financial and ethical complications from his time in Florida, including a brush with the Federal Election Commission.
Yet, amid these accusations, Nissan of Shelby’s defense remains resolute. Auto Gallery’s COO, Martin Del Castillo, adamantly denied wrongdoing, maintaining that customers had signed off on every necessary disclosure.
